Cognitive Linguistics: The Experiential Dynamics of Metaphor

This article attempts to demonstrate the applicability of cognitive linguistics and cognitive rhetoric to methods of close reading of literary texts, using passages from Shakespeare's Othello, Macbeth, and Love's Labour's Lost as examples. It ends with assertions of cognitive linguistics' further relevance to varieties of literary theory, including poststructuralism, culture studies, and feminism. It includes, as well, a brief discussion of the role cognitive linguistics might play in debates about scientific or empiricist epistemology.
