F. Elizabeth Hart
Matter, System, and Early Modern Studies: Outlines for a Materialist Linguistics
Configurations 6 (1998): 311-43

Using an analysis of Derridean deconstruction and general principles of complex systems theory, this article proposes an alternative "materialist" poststructuralism that includes rather than occludes the human mind while at the same time maintaining poststructuralism's emphasis on the ideological reading of culture and texts. It uses aspects of the shift and change in the Early Modern English of Shakespeare's linguistic environment to illustrate the work of cognitive figural forces at the most basic levels of sixteenth-century literary production.
